The first emergency number system to be deployed anywhere in the world was in London on 30 June 1937 [2] [3] using the number 999, and this was later extended to cover the entire country. [2] When 999 was dialed, a buzzer sounded and a red light flashed in the exchange to attract an operator's attention. [3]

The service responds to 999 phone calls across the region, and 111 phone calls from certain parts, providing triage and advice to enable an appropriate level of response. It is one of the busiest ambulance services in the world, and the busiest in the United Kingdom, providing care to more than 8.6 million people, who live and work in London.
The West Midlands Ambulance Service has advised its 999 call handlers to ask patients if they can make their own way to the hospital when services are under high demand.

NHS England sets targets for response times to 999 calls, which were first established in the 1970s. Call handlers were, until 2017, given just 60 seconds to decide on the urgency of the call. The clock stopped once a vehicle reached the patient - even if it was not the appropriate vehicle.
