Gulf Shores is located on the Gulf of Mexico, and is the southernmost settlement in the state of Alabama. [2] It is served by Alabama State Route 59 (Gulf Shores Parkway), which leads north to Foley. Route 182 (Beach Boulevard) runs east-west along the shore front, while Route 180 (Fort Morgan Road) runs parallel to it, north of Little Lagoon.
Gulf State Park is a public recreation area on the Gulf of Mexico in the city of Gulf Shores in southern Baldwin County, Alabama. The state park 's 6,150 acres (2,490 ha) mostly encompass the land behind the Gulf Shores beach community, between Highway 59 and SH 161 , with the west end extending further south to a wide beach area. Little Lagoon Nautical Chart. Little Lagoon is located on the western side of Gulf Shores, Alabama, and is situated between the Gulf of Mexico and Bon Secour Bay.The lagoon has four small fresh/brackish water lakes that drain into it, Lake Shelby (678 acres), Middle Lake (250 acres), Little Lake (45 acres), and Gator Lake (45 acres). In December 2011, the construction of a new island was completed. 1,400,000 yards (1,300,000 m) of sand was dredged from the sea floor and deposited around the lighthouse creating a 2,600-foot (790 m) by 500-foot (150 m), or approximately 15-acre (6.1 ha), island. [9]
In 1908, the Jones family funded construction of the Great Southern Golf and Country Club to attract more guests to their hotel. The grand hotel was crippled by economics of the Great Depression but held on through the 1940s. During construction of U.S. Route 90 in 1951, the Great Southern Hotel was demolished. [6]
Pelican Place at Craft Farms is a 372,000-square-foot (34,600 m 2) lifestyle center in Gulf Shores, Alabama. [1] It is planned to expand to 650,000 square feet (60,000 m 2 ). [ 2 ] It was designed by CMH Architects of Birmingham , the firm that also designed the Eastern Shore Centre in nearby Spanish Fort .
