The Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars, are awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry. [1] [2] They are presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in the United States in recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by the Academy's voting membership. [3]
Nominees are determined by single transferable vote within the directors branch of AMPAS; winners are selected by a plurality vote from the entire eligible voting members of the academy. [3] [4] [5] For the first eleven years of the Academy Awards, directors were allowed to be nominated for multiple films in the same year.
Actors that have won at least once include 159 males and 158 females—a total of 317. Only 45 actors—23 males and 22 females—are multiple Academy Award winners. Katharine Hepburn won four times from twelve nominations—all for lead roles—making her the actor with the most wins in Academy Awards history. [3]
