Dillwyn is located in east-central Buckingham County at (37.541658, −78.458869 U.S. Route 15 passes through the town, leading south 2 miles (3 km) to U.S. Route 60 and 23 miles (37 km) to Farmville, and north 37 miles (60 km) to Interstate 64 east of Charlottesville.

Buckingham County was created in 1761 from the southeastern portion of Albemarle County and was predominantly farmland. The county was probably named in honor of the Duke of Buckingham, though the precise origin is uncertain. Several changes were made to the borders, until the existing boundaries were established in 1860.
SR 20 is a C-shaped route that connects Charlottesville with Farmville (via US 15) in Southside Virginia. The state highway also links Charlottesville to Fredericksburg (via SR 3) by way of Orange County, within which SR 20 is the main east–west highway and intersects US 15 again in the county seat of Orange.
