Great Dane, formerly known as Great Dane Trailers, is a Chicago, Illinois based manufacturer of truck dry van, refrigerated van and flatbed semi-trailers.Established in 1900 by J.P. Wheless and T.H. McMillan as the Savannah Blowpipe Company [1] in Savannah, Georgia, it has gone on to become one of the world's largest manufacturers of commercial truck trailers.
Other subsidiaries include American Country Insurance Company (a provider of property and casualty insurance), Great Dane (the largest manufacturer of truck trailers, containers and chassis) and South Charleston Stamping & Manufacturing Company. The company was renamed Great Dane Limited Partnership, and was acquired by Chicago-based CC Industries.
A company bought in the acquisition, Great Dane Trailers Inc., became ICC's sole remaining subsidiary after further holdings were sold off in 1988. [ 8 ] In 1989, Goldberg engineered the reverse takeover of Checker Motors Corporation of Kalamazoo, Michigan , leaving ICC in control of two subsidiaries, Checker Motors and Great Dane Trailers.
