Four plant communities are represented: Desert Scrub, Black brush, Pinon-Juniper, and Riparian. Plants typical of the desert as well as woodland can be seen, and with adequate rainfall the spring brings a burst of wildflowers. Common species sighted are desert marigold, globe mallow, brittlebush, Joshua Tree, Mojave yucca, and indigo bush.
Hikers can park at the north Willow Springs campground and walk 5 miles (8 km) to the summit. Alternatively, hikers can turn North from Highway 160 and drive 7.5 miles (12 km) North on the Lovell Canyon Road and park where the pavement ends. The hike from here to the summit is about 3.3 miles (5.3 km) and has less elevation gain.

It is located on 63.86 acres (25.84 ha) in the Mojave Desert, below the Spring Mountains in the Red Rock Canyon area, 20 miles west of Las Vegas. The ranch has natural oasis habitat because of the spring water surfacing there.
