James Edward Cleveland (December 5, 1931 – February 9, 1991) was an American gospel singer, musician, and composer. Known as the "King of Gospel," Cleveland was a driving force behind the creation of the modern gospel sound by incorporating traditional black gospel, soul, pop, and jazz in arrangements for mass choirs.
The song is mentioned in James Joyce's Ulysses (1922). [5] It gained renewed popularity when it was sung by Jeanette MacDonald in the 1936 hit film San Francisco. [6] [7] The melody formed the basis of a Spiritual titled Hosanna, which in turn was the basis for the opening of Duke Ellington's "Black and Tan Fantasy".

Peace Be Still is the live album of gospel singer James Cleveland and The Angelic Choir of the First Baptist Church of Nutley, NJ, a choir directed by Rev. Lawrence Roberts. It was recorded on September 19, 1963, at Trinity Seventh Day Adventist Church in Newark, NJ, and released in 1964 under Savoy Records .
The lyrics refer to a New Jerusalem, a city of God established after the death of the anti-Christ, and the Second Coming. The track "Los Endos" on A Trick of the Tail has Collins singing "There's an angel standing in the sun" twice in succession, followed by "Free to get back home" as the track fades out.
In a 1985 interview in Hitch magazine, James said the title of the song came to him while he was reading the Biblical Book of Revelation: I took the title from the Book of Revelations [sic] in the Bible, reading about the New Jerusalem. The words jumped out at me, and they're not together; they're spread out over three or four verses.
