Backbone tube chassis is a type of automobile construction chassis that is similar to the body-on-frame design. Instead of a two-dimensional ladder-type structure , it consists of a strong tubular backbone (usually rectangular in cross section ) that connects the front and rear suspension attachment areas.
The main part of the car is a space frame chassis. The chassis can be cut to size at home and built according to instructions from rectangular 25×25 mm and 19×19 mm mild steel tubes. It can also be purchased as a flat-pack kit with sets of tubes cut to size and ready for assembly at home or even pre-built by the supplier.

The original 1982 prototype had a bespoke four-wheel chassis which was specially constructed, and of shorter wheelbase than the donor car, a Citroën Ami.
