Global milk production has increased rapidly over the past 50 years. According to Our World in Data, global milk production has nearly tripled since 1961, reaching around 930 million tonnes in 2022. The most popular milk is cow milk, followed by buffalo milk, goat milk, sheep milk and camel milk.
Annual milk production in the same period increased from 7,726 to 8,550 kg (17,033 to 18,850 lb) per cow in these developed countries. The lowest average production was in New Zealand at 3,974 kg (8,761 lb) per cow.
Production of some products is highly concentrated in a few countries, China, the leading producer of wheat and ramie in 2013, produces 95% of the world's ramie fiber but only 17% of the world's wheat.
