Uranium Corporation of India (UCIL) is a public sector undertaking (PSU), under the Department of Atomic Energy for uranium mining and processing. The corporation was founded in 1967 and is responsible for the mining and milling of uranium ore in India. [2] The firm operates mines at Jadugora, Bhatin, Narwapahar, Turamdih and Banduhurang [3]
Uranium Corporation of India: 1967–Present Discovered in 1951, Jaduguda Mine has the distinction of being the first uranium mine of the country. The mine is accessed through two 5-metre (16 ft) diameter vertical shafts of depth of 640 m (2,100 ft), attaining a total depth of 905 m (2,969 ft). Narwapahar Mine: Jharkhand: Jadugora, East Singhbhum
A uranium purification plant is usually located close to the mine as uranium ore is converted here to yellowcake.According to Department of Atomic Energy, the ore extracted from this mine is of 0.065 grade, which means that the plant needs to process 1000 kg of ore to extract 65 grams of usable uranium.
The Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Plant (MBRAPP) is a proposed nuclear power plant to be built on a 1,366.49 acres (553.00 ha) area, near Banswara district of Rajasthan. [ 2 ] [ 1 ] The project will have an installed capacity of 2800 Megawatts (MW).
Natural uranium, mined at Jaduguda Uranium Mine in the Singhbhum area of Jharkhand state, is converted into nuclear fuel assemblies. A 220 MW PHWR fuel bundle contains 15.2 kg of natural uranium dioxide (UO 2). Uranium dioxide pellets, which generate heat while undergoing fission, also generate fission products. [1]
AMD over the past five decades has been instrumental in locating Uranium resources in Singhbhum Shear Zone, Jharkhand; KPM (Domiasiat), Wahkut, Wahkyn, Meghalaya; Lambapur - Chitrial, Peddagattu, Telangana; Tummalapalle, Andhra Pradesh; Gogi, Karnataka and Rohil, Rajasthan.
Monazite powder, a rare earth and thorium phosphate mineral, is the primary source of the world's thorium. India's three-stage nuclear power programme was formulated by Homi Bhabha, the well-known physicist, in the 1950s to secure the country's long term energy independence, through the use of uranium and thorium reserves found in the monazite sands of coastal regions of South India.
The Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS; also Rajasthan Atomic Power Project - RAPP) is a nuclear power plant located at Rawatbhata in the state of Rajasthan, India. It is the fourth largest nuclear power plant in the country after the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, Kakrapar Atomic Power Station, and Tarapur Atomic Power Station interms of installed capacity.
