The school was officially renamed Coppin State University on April 13, 2004. Coppin's first president (1930–1956) was Miles Connor . He was succeeded by Parlett Moore in 1956, who served until Calvin W. Burnett took over as Coppin's third president in 1970.

From 1978 to 1998, Bryan was a faculty member at Baltimore's Coppin State College (later University), where she rose to the rank of full professor. While at Coppin, she revised and directed the honors program and founded and directed one of the nation's fourteen original Ronald McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Programs.
Juan Max Dixon (born October 9, 1978) is an American former professional basketball player and the previous head coach for Coppin State University in Baltimore.Dixon led the University of Maryland Terrapins to their first NCAA championship in 2002 and earned Most Outstanding Player honors at the 2002 Final Four.
