In 1884 a two-year School of Pharmacy was founded. The School of Nursing began as a program in 1963 and was incorporated as a department into the Purdue University College of Technology in 1964. In 1979 the School of Health Sciences was formed under the newly organized Schools of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences.
As of FY2023, the Retzky College of Pharmacy ranked in the top ten recipients of all federal funding for research, e.g., National Institutes of Health, of 122 U.S. colleges of pharmacy. This program is a four year course of study following a minimum prerequisite of two years of pre-pharmacy study. The program includes 3 years of study on the Edwardsville campus and one full year of "on-the-job" education at an area clinical site. The University of Illinois College of Medicine offers a four-year program leading to the MD degree at four different sites in Illinois: Chicago, Peoria, Rockford, and formerly Urbana–Champaign. The Urbana–Champaign site stopped accepting new students after Fall 2016 to make room for the newly established Carle Illinois College of Medicine. [1]
