Oil sampling is a procedure for collecting a volume of fluid from lubricated or hydraulic machinery for the purpose of oil analysis. Much like collecting forensic evidence at a crime scene, when collecting an oil sample, it is important to ensure that procedures are used to minimize disturbance of the sample during and after the sampling process.
An oil formulation consists of the base or stock oil and oil additives. Most oil formulations contain basic additives and detergents, designed to react with and neutralise acids, [2] preventing damage to engine parts, including corrosion of metal surfaces.
Motor oil, engine oil, or engine lubricant is any one of various substances used for the lubrication of internal combustion engines. They typically consist of base oils enhanced with various additives, particularly antiwear additives , detergents, dispersants , and, for multi-grade oils, viscosity index improvers .
The total acid number (TAN) is a measurement of acidity that is determined by the amount of potassium hydroxide in milligrams that is needed to neutralize the acids in one gram of oil. [1] It is an important quality measurement of crude oil. The TAN value indicates to the crude oil refinery the potential of corrosion problems.
Biodiesel from vegetable oil sources have been recorded as having a cetane number range of 46 to 52, and animal-fat based biodiesels cetane numbers range from 56 to 60. [12] Dimethyl ether is a potential diesel fuel as it has a high cetane rating (55-60) and can be produced as a biofuel . [ 13 ]
Spectrometric Oil Analysis Program (SOAP) is a method used by aircraft operators, including several Air Forces of the World, to test the health of aircraft engines by performing frequent laboratory testing of the engine oil. The tests reveal the chemical composition of any metal particles suspended in the oil samples. By comparing the results ...
Machines in this category include the steam or gas turbines in a power plant, crude oil export pumps on an oil rig or the cracker in an oil refinery. With critical machinery being at the heart of the process it is seen to require full on-line condition monitoring to continually record as much data from the machine as possible regardless of cost ...
The effects may include: corrosion, abrasive wear, clogged cylinder valves, fuel equipment damage, fuel pump failure, premature ignition, ignition failure, explosion, or engine failure. [1] Several indices are used to characterise fuels. [2] For spark-ignition engines the fuel has an octane rating.
