Carter County is a county in the Ozarks of Missouri.At the 2020 census, it had a population of 5,202. [1] The largest city and county seat is Van Buren. [2] The county was officially organized on March 10, 1859, and is named after Zimri A. Carter, a pioneer settler who came to Missouri from South Carolina in 1812.
The site of the town of Ellsinore was originally patented on April 15, 1857, by Robert Patterson just two years before Carter County was organized. The land was later sold to a Mr. Cook, who in October 1876, sold the land to Charles Hearin.

Grandin was platted in 1910 on the site of the Missouri Lumber and Mining Company's company town which dates back to the late 1880s. [5] The community was named after E. B. Grandin, a businessperson in the local lumber industry. [5] A post office has been in operation at Grandin since 1887. [6]
