The act ratifying the Treaty of Union was finally carried in the Parliament of Scotland by 110 votes to 69 on 16 January 1707, with a number of key amendments. News of the ratification and of the amendments was received in Westminster, where the Act was passed quickly through both Houses and received the royal assent on 6 March. [ 48 ]

The Kingdom of Great Britain was established on 1 May 1707, shortly after the parliaments of Scotland and England had ratified the Treaty of Union by each approving Acts of Union combining the two parliaments and the powers of the two crowns. Scotland's crown, sceptre, and sword of state remained at Edinburgh Castle.
The resulting Acts of Union of 1707 that created the Kingdom of Great Britain were largely concerned with economic matters. Scotland gained access to English markets and colonies, concessions were give to a number of Scottish interest groups and there were generous cash payments to compensate for recent Scottish losses. 16 January – Parliament of Scotland passes the Union with England Act. 19 March – official copy of the Act of Union signed by the Scottish Chancellor [1] and the Act is ratified by the Parliament of England. 25 March–28 April – last sitting of Parliament of Scotland in Edinburgh until it is revived in 1999 as the Scottish Parliament.
12 May (1 May Old Style) – The new sovereign state of Great Britain comes into being as a result of the Acts of Union which ratified the Treaty of Union: the kingdoms of England and Scotland are combined into a single, United Kingdom [2] and merge the Parliaments of England and Scotland to form the Parliament of Great Britain.
