Wilbur Park, a 1-acre (4,000 m 2) park donated by local industrialist W. T. Rawleigh and named after his son (who died during World War I), was deeded over to Freeport Park District on July 13, 1948. The park features landscaped terrain and playground equipment.

Also in 1959, the Long Island Park Commission handed over 9 acres (3.6 hectares) just north of the Cleveland Avenue School to be used as a high school athletic fields; the Buffalo Avenue Field House there was added in 1952. Highland is located in Freeport, Illinois on 140 acres (or 56.6 ha).There are seven buildings on the campus, which are mainly used for classes. The college's sports complex is also the local YMCA, to which Highland's students who are carrying 12 or more credit hours a semester can receive a free membership.
The oldest building in the district is the Mitchell-Soule-Davis House (49 Main), a 1 + 1 ⁄ 2-story Federal Cape built c. 1790. One of the more impressive houses is the c. 1830 Harrington House (45 Main), a transitional Federal-Greek Revival brick house which is now home to the Freeport Historical Society.
