To accomplish this the velocity has to stay above 2700 f.p.s. in the lighter rounds. The green tip will also fragment but not as easily as the older round. Then put the rounds into a shorter barrel like the M4's and the fragmentation range drops off rapidly. The 20" barrels still due well to a couple hundred meters with the green tip.
Also most all 223 ammo will explosively expand in soft tissue. HP, ballistic tip, FMJBT or not. The 2700FPS will make the bullet do its work. The added expansion from the specialized bullet increase the efficiency of the ammo but if plane jane 55gr works the best the that is what you should use!
A quick Google search shows Red Army Standard .223 to be non-magnetic, lead core, steel CASE. It doesn't appear to be a bi-metallic jacket, like some 7.62 ammo is. The range guy probably thinks it's eother a bi-mettalic jacket or steel core like some 7.62x39 ammo is, or it has a steel penetrator like 5.56 M855. My range doesn't allow M855, either.

New reloader and I'm starting with .223 ammo for my Superior Arms 1:9 twist AR15. I purchased a One Book/One Caliber reloading pamphlet from Gander Mountain. I found some recipes I thought I'd try and then commenced to shop the rest of the store for the components I still needed.

The best deal I can find on .223/5.56 is xm193 FMJ ammo for $379 a case. What is some other non-FMJ ammo for the .223/5.56 that will not break the bank? I know ammo is hard to find right now and I am not worried about finding it, just wanting to know what I should buy. Soft tip and hollow point is acceptable. Or should I just find a different ...

It's actually fine for use at any distance a 223 is good for, it will simply shed velocity and drop a little more quickly than a boattail of the same weight starting out at the same speed. Often, the flat base is more accurate, and if I know my shots will be inside 300, I load the flatties.
