    Earning and profit/loss are equivalent terms. The problem is that some of the companies (e.g. Apple) have after-tax earnings listed and some others seem to have pre-tax earnings listed. A consensus should be reached here on whether to list pre-tax or after-tax earnings and that should be clearly stated in the lead, one way or the other.
