Covers phosphorus sources, strategies for determining fertilizer needs and more. When producers pay special attention to managing phosphorus (P), it can lead to profitable crop production.
Along with nitrogen and potassium, phosphorus is the P in the NPK formula found on garden fertilizer labels. It provides secondary minerals and supports nutrient uptake needed for early root growth, plant cell and seed development, winter hardiness and the efficient use of water.
High phosphorus fertilizers are specifically designed to support plants throughout their reproductive cycles, from flowering to producing fruit. Phosphorus is also important because it helps plants create strong root systems.
For years, farmers have relied on monoammonium phosphate, a nutrient-rich phosphorus fertilizer, to boost crop yields. These fast-acting, water-soluble phosphorus fertilizer granules rapidly dissolve in damp soil, separating into ammonium and phosphate — key components for healthy plant development.
Phosphorus is needed in especially large amounts in meristematic tissues, where cells are rapidly dividing and enlarging. Phosphorus is very mobile within the plant, so when the supply is short, phosphorus in the older leaves is mobilized and transferred to the newer, rapidly growing leaves.
Phosphorus fertilizer application methods include broadcast, banded, or band-applied with the seed (Fig. 26.1). Liquid or dry fertilizers are used with any of these placement options. Starter fertilizers, placed at planting, can be located to the side of the row or with the seed (pop-up).
