Ash is a young man who travels with various companions, aiming to fulfill his dream to become a Pokémon Master; his Pokémon lineup constantly changes over the course of the series, with its sole constant member being Pikachu, Ash's first Pokémon. Ash is loosely based on Red, the player character from the Generation I games Pokémon Red and Blue.
As Ash struggles to bond with Pikachu, who acts aloof and openly distrusts him, the two stumble upon a wild Pidgey, and Ash unsuccessfully tries to catch it by throwing a Poké Ball. Ash uses his Pokédex and learns that in order to catch a Pokémon via a Poké Ball, a trainer must first use their Pokémon to battle it, thereby weakening it.
Injured and tired, Ash tells Pikachu to get inside his Ball, but he once again refuses. Instead, Pikachu defends Ash from the Spearow by summoning a large Thunderbolt that scares them away. As the storm ceases, Ho-Oh flies above and drops a feather called a Rainbow Wing. Ash and Pikachu decide to go and find the Legendary Pokémon.

Both Ash and Volkner defeated Team Rocket with the help of Ash's newly evolved Torterra. Later, Volkner battled Ash in a Gym Battle only to be defeated. Volkner returned in Journeys as he is participating in the World Coronation series and reunites with Ash. While he does put a good fight, he lost to Ash again. Drayden (シャガ, Shaga)
Ash's third Gym battle with the electric master Wattson is full of surprises when, after an encounter with a robotic Raikou, Pikachu wins the match alone with super-charged Thunderbolts. However Ash's joy at receiving the badge disappears when Pikachu turns ill, and a depressed Wattson leaves Mauville City convinced he is a weak Gym Leader.
The DVD releases were known as the "Collector's Edition DVDs" and consisted of 7-10 episodes per DVD. These releases have long since gone out-of-print. Viz Media released Pokémon: Johto League Champions – The Complete Collection on DVD in the United States on May 31, 2016.
