  2. 48V Alternator/Generators for automotive use? Do they exist ... -...

Uprating a 24V alternator to get 48V (nom.) at high currents isn't going to work reliably without rewinding the stator, even if you replace the diode and regulator. You'd have to double the flux from the field coil on the rotor, which would require twice the current through it, resulting in four times greater Joule heating of the rotor, which ...

  3. Converting automotive alternator to put out 48V?

I am, but not for an off-grid energy system. It will be to power a 48V electric outboard and charge the 48V battery bank supplying it. Sort of a hybrid system, so something small and light (ie: an alternator coupled to a small engine) is needed.

Hi Mike, Well in answer to your question I just want to see if a one box solution can be accomplished to power a pair of high power LDMOS RF devices without involving any other external equipment in a motor vehicle such as a 28V alternator (easier to boost to 48V) or a 48V alternator. The fact is I drive a diesel so no ignition to interfere ...

Boost converter will be better. If the fan is thermally controlled then you can use the SMPS control to do things like speed control ( low, med and high speed are easy with no switching letting 12V through, 18V and 24V to the fan) and on off switching as well. 40A with a voltage doubler using capacitors means either massive capacitors or running switches in the MHz range with all the EMI and heat.

Their alternator charger product also has a nice right angle connector for the battery, but there's no separate listing to just buy that cable. This is what I have so far from my tinkering. You have a 4 battery model. (12 x 4 = 48V) For transformer ratings, no one uses the DC bus as the primary winding voltage. EVER. Generally, the primary windings are marked anywhere from 6 - 8 V per battery.

Only newer HD-Stations have an automatic 24V/48V switching depending on the type of cartrigde. The two types differ in their heater resistance: C245: ~2,4Ohm at 22°C C470: ~7,4Ohm at 22°C JBC designed the HD-2B very modification-friendly: The transformer has two 23,5V/50Hz secondary windings switched in series to form the 47V heater supply.
