The Vertical Ray of the Sun (Vietnamese: Mùa hè chiều thẳng đứng, French: À la verticale de l'été) is the third feature film by Vietnamese-born French director Trần Anh Hùng. It was released in 2000 and is the final part of what many now consider to be Tran's "Vietnam trilogy."
In 1999, director Tran Anh Hung invited Hai Yen, only 17 at that time, to play a role in the film The Vertical Ray of the Sun (Vietnam/France). [3]In 2000, Hai Yen appeared again in the film Song of the Stork (Vũ khúc con cò), a co-production between Vietnam and Singapore, directed by Nguyễn Phan Quang Bình (Vietnam) and Jonathan Foo (Singapore).
The Vertical Ray of the Sun, released in 2000, was the third film in his "Vietnam trilogy." [ 15 ] After a sabbatical , Hung returned with the noir psychological thriller I Come with the Rain (2009), which featured a star-studded international cast including Josh Hartnett and Elias Koteas .
It was Tran Anh Hung's first feature film and stars his wife, Tran Nu Yên-Khê. It is also his first collaboration with Vietnamese composer Tôn-Thât Tiêt who subsequently wrote the music for two more films: Cyclo and Vertical Ray of the Sun. Although set in Vietnam, the film was shot entirely on a soundstage in Bry-sur-Marne, France.
