The Otago cricket team, nicknamed the Volts since the 1997–98 season, [1] are a New Zealand first-class cricket team which first played representative cricket in 1864. [2] The team represents the Otago , Southland and North Otago regions of New Zealand's South Island.
In 2021–22, the side primarily used University Oval, as well as playing two games at Whitestone Contracting Stadium and three, for the first time, at Queenstown Events Centre. In 2022–23, the side used University Oval and Queenstown Events Centre for their home matches. [17] [18]
The Queenstown Events Centre is also located in Frankton and contains the main recreational and sporting facilities for Queenstown residents. Facilities at the Queenstown Events Centre include Alpine Aqualand (swimming pools and hydro slide), sports fields for football and cricket, cricket nets, indoor courts and events facilities.
Five of the clubs are from Dunedin and one each are from Wānaka, Queenstown, Mosgiel, Timaru, and Invercargill. The league has also previously included an Otago youth development team. There is currently a U-15 Development League that runs alongside the competition. Until 2009, the league was known as the SoccerSouth Premier League.
They compete in the Plunket Shield first-class competition, the Ford Trophy domestic one-day competition and the Men's Super Smash T20 competition as the Northern Brave. The T20 team was previously known as the Northern Knights until the 2021–22 season, when both the men's and women's teams were rebranded under the same name.
The Hallyburton Johnstone Shield is the premier domestic women's one-day cricket competition in New Zealand. [1] The tournament began in 1935–36, as a first-class competition, but is now played as a 50-over competition, with six provincial teams taking part: Auckland, Canterbury, Central Districts, Northern Districts, Otago and Wellington.
