An oroantral fistula (OAF) is an epithelialized oroantral communication (OAC), which refers to an abnormal connection between the oral cavity and the antrum. [1] The creation of an OAC is most commonly due to the extraction of a maxillary tooth (typically a maxillary first molar) which is closely related to the antral floor.
Furthermore, the drainage orifice lies near the roof of the sinus, and so the maxillary sinus does not drain well, and infection develops more easily. The maxillary sinus may drain into the mouth via an abnormal opening, an oroantral fistula, a particular risk after tooth extraction.
Venous blood can once more enter the chest and the heart; cardiac output increases. Return of cardiac output Blood return to the heart is enhanced by the effect of the entry of blood that has been dammed back, causing a rapid increase in cardiac output (24 seconds on). The stroke volume usually rises above normal before returning to a normal level.
Normally, following extraction of a tooth, blood is extravasated into the socket, and a blood clot forms. [4] This blood clot is replaced with granulation tissue which consists of proliferating fibroblasts and endothelial cells derived from remnants of the periodontal membrane, surrounding alveolar bone and gingival mucosa. [4]
Although absorption is rather low in this spectral range, it still contributes to the overall attenuation of tissue. Figure 3: The molar extinction coefficients of eumelanin and pheomelanin. [5] Other tissue components with less significant contributions to the total absorption spectrum of tissue are melanin and fat.
