The non-towing drivers can drive up to 70+mph and even greater on the Autobahns The fines are such that you just don't risk going above the max towing speed limit on the continent.
Subaru's tow limits for the U.S. market 2014 Forester are 1,000 lbs. for a trailer without brakes, and 1,500 lbs for a trailer with brakes, both subject to GVWR and GAWR specifications. I'd be concerned about the transmission and the brakes. Note that Subaru's warranties do not apply to vehicle damage caused by towing.

I like the bit of extra capacity with the 2,400 lb number. The 2008 Forester brochure just says 2400 lbs across the board -- all models and all transmissions. The 2008 Owners Manual on page 8-19 says 1,000 lbs without brakes or 2,400 lbs with brakes for both MT and AT. But for AT it reduces the capacity to 1,000 lbs if towing uphill for 5 miles ...

I see Forester being rated at only 680 kg (in Canada) What I don't understand is that they are providing towing capacity regardless of the transmission type. What I understand from reading this forum is that the main constraint is CVT cooling.
My original Forester brochure shows for S Turbo manual/auto (all in kg) Kerb weight 1420/1440 Gross weight 1950/1970 Payload 530 Towing nose wt 75 Towing braked 1800 Towing unbraked 500 gtw 3750/3770 Hope that helps! The two higher models could tow 5000lbs. When I asked the difference, it was because transmission oil coolers were installed. Perhaps, a transmission cooler is available from Subaru that would increase the tow rate. If not, I agree with the others as far as towing within the weight limits set by Subaru.
