The city is approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) south of the Canada–U.S. border. The city is located along the Nooksack River and State Route 539.
Donovan was an officer in the Fairhaven Water Company, Copper River Oil & Mining Company, and Bellingham Bay Transportation Company. In 1900, Donovan moved his family from Fairhaven to Whatcom, Washington.
