The new building of the Bozeman Public Library was opened in November, 2006 and is well-known locally, nationally, and internationally for its use of "green" architecture. [2] It has 53,000 square feet of space and is the first public building in Montana to have Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver level certification. [ 1 ]
The first library in Bozeman was formed by the Young Men's Library Association in a room above a drugstore in 1872. It later moved to the mayor's office and was taken over by the city in 1890. [24] The first Grange meeting in Montana Territory was held in Bozeman in 1873. [25] The Northern Pacific Railway reached Bozeman from the east in 1883. [26]
The Bozeman Carnegie Library in Bozeman, Montana was built in 1903–1904 with funding from Andrew Carnegie. City librarian Bell Chrisman led the effort to convince the city to seek Carnegie funds. It is one of 17 libraries in Montana and 1,679 in the United States funded by Carnegie.
