In the Gospel of John, Nathanael is introduced as a friend of Philip, from Bethsaida (1:43-44). [2] The first disciples who follow Jesus are portrayed as reaching out immediately to family or friends: thus, Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote — Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph".
Methodist founder John Wesley summarised the opening verses of John 1 as follows: John 1:1–2 describes the state of things before the creation; John 1:3 describes the state of things in the creation; John 1:4 describes the state of things in the time of man's innocence; John 1:5 describes the state of things in the time of man's corruption. In the King James Version of the Bible the text reads: Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! The New International Version translates the passage as: When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false."
[2] [3] It appears in Matthew 4:18–22, Mark 1:16-20 and Luke 5:1–11 on the Sea of Galilee. John 1:35–51 reports the first encounter with two of the disciples a little earlier in the presence of John the Baptist. Particularly in the Gospel of Mark, the beginning of the Ministry of Jesus and the call of the first disciples are inseparable. [4]
Philip seeks out Nathanael, and likely found him at Cana of Galilee, the native place of Nathanael (John 21:2). There are a variety of opinions on who exactly Nathanael is. However, according to Lapide most believe he is the Apostle Bartholomew. First, because the other gospels always join Philip and Bartholomew.
In the King James Version of the Bible the text reads: Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel. The New International Version translates the passage as: Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
In the King James Version of the Bible the text reads: Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. The New International Version translates the passage as: "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked.
