There is an hourly bus service to the nearby towns of Carnforth and Lancaster, to the south; and Kendal, to the north, operated by Stagecoach North West. The Lancaster Canal runs through the village. Holme Park Quarry is a small quarry to the east of the village; also on site is a premix concrete plant.
Dodd lies on Forestry England land known as Dodd Wood; for many years it was extensively planted with conifers right up to the summit which obstructed the view. However, Forestry England started a programme of tree clearance from the top of the fell in 2001 and the summit of the fell is now clear; it is hoped that it will revert to heather moorland in years to come.

Fell Foot Park is a country park situated at the southern end of Windermere in Cumbria, the largest lake in England. It is north of Newby Bridge in the civil parish of Staveley-in-Cartmel, in South Lakeland district. Formerly the grounds of a Victorian estate, it is now owned by the National Trust.
The northern ridges lead to Souther Fell, Bannerdale Crags, Bowscale Fell and Mungrisdale Common, with its barely discernible summit. The northern section is known commonly as "Back o'Skiddaw" and contains many lower fells, although the paths to climb them can be long.
