Upendranath Ashk was born Upendranath Sharma to a Saraswat Brahmin [11] family in Jalandhar, Panjab. Ashk began composing Panjabi couplets at the age of 11, [12] and began writing in Urdu in 1926, under the tutelage of the Jalandhari poet Mohammad Ali "Azar".
