Higbee's was a department store founded in 1860 in Cleveland, Ohio. [1] In 1987, Higbee's was sold to the joint partnership of Dillard's department stores and Youngstown-based developer, Edward J. DeBartolo. [2]
It is constructed almost entirely of aluminum and was built as the home of the Canton–Akron Indians, the Double-A minor league affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, which played at the ballpark from 1989 to 1996. The team moved to a new downtown ballpark in Akron and was renamed the Akron Aeros prior to the start of the 1997 season.
Sam Deutsch, a Cleveland jeweler and boxing promoter who also owned a minor-league baseball team, bought an NFL franchise in 1923 and named the team the Indians. They played only seven games in that first season, but they had a shot at the championship, with a 3–0–3 record going into their final game against the Canton Bulldogs, who were also undefeated.

Prior to the arrival of the Browns, the stadium was briefly the home field for two other NFL teams, the Cleveland Indians in 1931, and the Cleveland Rams from 1936 to 1937 and again from 1939 to 1941. The Galleria was conceptualised in 1985 by businessman and real estate developer Richard E. Jacobs, who famously purchased the Cleveland Indians baseball team and the existing Tower at Erieview. Jacobs' planned to convert the Tower's surround plaza into a shopping centre which would serve the Cleveland area.
