Weippe (/ ˈ w iː ˈ aɪ p / ⓘ) is a city in Clearwater County, Idaho, United States.The population was 441 at the 2010 census, up from 411 in 2000. [4] In September 1805, the starving Lewis and Clark Expedition first met the Nez Perce on the Weippe Prairie, south of the city.
Weippe Prairie is a large clearing, a "beautiful upland prairie field of about two by three miles bordered by farmland made from cleared pine forests", [3] just north of the Middle Fork Clearwater River at 3,000 feet elevation near the town of Weippe in Clearwater County, Idaho.
Timberline Schools are a combined elementary and secondary school in Clearwater County, Idaho. Midway between Weippe and Pierce on Highway 11, the schools are operated by the Orofino Joint School District #171, headquartered to the west in Orofino. Elias D. Pierce and Wilbur F. Bassett made the first discovery of gold in Idaho, on Orofino Creek (Canal Gulch) in 1860, 1 mile (2 km) north of present-day Pierce. Until 1904, Clearwater County was part of Shoshone County to the north. It was annexed by Nez Perce County for several years and then was established as a new county in 1911. [3]
Brown's Creek CCC Camp Barracks in Weippe, Idaho was built in 1933 listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. [1] It is a one-story frame building, "a standard-design Civilian Conservation Corps work center building." [2] After being relocated in 1947, it has served as Weippe Public Library. [2]
