A geodesic dome is a hemispherical thin-shell structure (lattice-shell) based on a geodesic polyhedron. The rigid triangular elements of the dome distribute stress throughout the structure, making geodesic domes able to withstand very heavy loads for their size.
The house, inhabited by Fuller while he taught at Southern Illinois University, was the only geodesic dome Fuller lived in, as well as the only property he ever owned. Fuller, a prolific architect and engineer, popularized the geodesic dome as a building design, and his house was one of the first geodesic dome residences to be constructed.
The 31 great circles are shown here in 3 directions, with 5-fold, 3-fold, and 2-fold symmetry. There are 4 types of right spherical triangles by the intersected great circles, seen by color in the right image.
For example, the icosahedron is {3,5+} 1,0, and pentakis dodecahedron, {3,5+} 1,1 is seen as a regular dodecahedron with pentagonal faces divided into 5 triangles. The primary face of the subdivision is called a principal polyhedral triangle (PPT) or the breakdown structure. Calculating a single PPT allows the entire figure to be created.
Geodesic dome (Montreal Biosphere, Canada) Geodesic domes are the upper portion of geodesic spheres. They are composed of a framework of triangles in a polyhedron pattern. [74] The structures are named for geodesics and are based upon geometric shapes such as icosahedrons, octahedrons or tetrahedrons.
The geodesic dome is 36 metres (118 ft) in diameter, composed of 6,433 polished stainless steel triangles that form the sphere that reflects the sky. [5] These triangles are 1.5 meters long and are fixed on a thin metal frame with the same triangular geodesic structure, consisting of 2,580 steel tube bars. [ 6 ]
He adds that the eco-domes are much faster to build than a standard home. Prices range from around 2,500 Moroccan dirhams ($247) per square meter to 4,500 dirhams ($445), and can vary according to ...
