Just north of Airport Road, Taylor Road enters Punta Gorda city limits. It passes the historic Punta Gorda Atlantic Coast Line Depot at Carmalita Street, where the railroad tracks cross through the intersection. CR 765A terminates at the northbound lanes of US 41 just outside of Downtown Punta Gorda.
The airport serves the Southwest Florida region, including the Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Naples-Marco Island, and Punta Gorda metropolitan areas, and is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection port of entry. It currently is the second-busiest single-runway airport in the United States, after San Diego International Airport, California. [3]
In 1980, US 17 was realigned and elevated slightly at the southern end in Punta Gorda to accommodate the construction of I-75, which also included splitting the route into the current one-way pairs along Marion Street and Olympia Avenue. The route formerly continued along Marion Avenue to Florida Street and Dundee Road.

On August 13, 2004, Hurricane Charley made landfall near the southern terminus of US 17 at Punta Gorda. [5] The hurricane threatened to hit much of the highway, [6] affecting the route in Florida from Punta Gorda to north of Orlando (when Charley followed the route of I-4 out to sea).
