The territory of Lithuania is divided into 10 counties (Lithuanian: singular apskritis, plural apskritys), all named after their capitals. The counties are divided into 60 municipalities (Lithuanian: singular savivaldybė , plural savivaldybės ): 9 city municipalities, 43 district municipalities and 8 municipalities.
Currently for Lithuania, ISO 3166-2 codes are defined for 10 counties, 7 city municipalities, 44 district municipalities and 9 municipalities. Each code consists of two parts, separated by a hyphen. It includes all counties of Lithuania except Vilnius County. The region covers a land area of 55,569 km 2 and has a population of approximately 2 million people.
