The Metropolitan United Methodist Church is a church located at 8000 Woodward Avenue (at Chandler) in the New Center area of Detroit, Michigan.It was completed in 1926, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, [1] and designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1986. [2]
When the church at Congress and Randolph burned down in 1863, the two congregations consolidated and decided to build a church at Woodward and Adams. The cornerstone of Central Church's sanctuary was laid on July 3, 1866. [5] The original church campus included the sanctuary, a chapel, an office building, and a parsonage on Adams Street.

The St. Louis congregation which became Washington Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Zion church was founded in about 1865 as home prayer meetings with the first known pastor, Gary Matthews. [2] After its founding and over the years, the location of the Washington Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion congregation moved around the neighborhood. [2]
