The earliest recorded horse-race in Birmingham according to Chris Pitt and Chas Hammond took place in May 1747 [1] but it is not known where that race took place. At various times racing took place at Smethwick, Handsworth, Sparkbrook, Hall Green and Four Oaks; but as Birmingham spread outwards the open ground needed for horse racing became scarcer.
