In May 1952, Alex Lester was loaned from Bell Canada to the Electronics Division of the DDP to coordinate the military's communications developments with Bell. He soon learned of the problems with the Pinetree Line's communications, and approached Thomas Wardrope Eadie, then Vice President of Operations at Bell, with the idea that Bell would offer to take on construction management of the line.

The name "Red Forest" comes from the ginger-brown colour of the pine trees after they died following the absorption of high levels of ionizing radiation as a consequence of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster on 26 April 1986. [1] The site remains one of the most contaminated areas in the world today. [2]
Pinus jeffreyi occurs from southwest Oregon south through much of California (mainly on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada), to northern Baja California in Mexico. It is a high-altitude species; in the north of its range, it grows widely at 1,500 to 2,100 m (4,900 to 6,900 ft) altitude, and at 1,800 to 2,900 m (5,900 to 9,500 ft) in the south of its range.
