To join the Lavrio line to its network, SPAP built a connection between Agioi Anargyroi (Kato Liosia) and Iraklio (1931). The Lavrio line was eventually closed in 1957, due to political pressures from the road lobby. [7] The line from Attiki Square to Kifissia operated as a steam locomotive hauled railway with numerous level crossings until 1938.
Line A3 runs between Athens and Chalcis, and Line A4 runs between Piraeus and Kiato. [30] [29] The train service between Kiato and Aigio is a local Peloponnese service. [31] The Athens Suburban Railway operates from 4:30 am to midnight daily, and there are 45 stations in the network. [30]
The station opened in 1891 when the Piraeus, Athens and Peloponnese Railways (S.P.A.P.) line was extended to Olympia. In 1951 the S.P.A.P. absorbed the Line. In 1953 the S.P.A.P. itself was absorbed into the Northwestern Greece Railways (SDBE). In 1962 the station became part of the Hellenic State Railways (SEK).
As of 2020, the line is completed until the city of Aigio. [1] A 5.2 km underground section is planned for the final section from Kastellokampos to Agios Andreas in Patras. [4] [5] For most of the section between Athens Airport in East Attica and Mandra in West Attica, the line runs along the median strip of the Attiki Odos motorway.
