There are a number of dogs who fall into this category, even with owners who do everything they should in the training department. Psychiatric disorders are true medical problems that can't always be 'cured' with behavioral modification. Ullaluv, I've noticed that veterinary behaviorists have been using trazodone more in the last few years.
However, Trazodone has been found to enhance the effects of Prozac so the 2 can be used well together. And there are some dogs who don't tolerate Prozac and other anxiety meds well for whom just taking a low dose of Trazodone daily may work. FYI, Trazodone is not a benzo, it regulates serotonin uptake.
Trazodone does increase serotonin levels, but has fairly mild effects compared to drugs like Prozac. It can be used with Anipryl if done cautiously. Benzodiazepines like Valium or Xanax are safe to use with Anipryl, but there is some concern that sedatives like these have the potential to increase confusion and make CCD worse.
Trazodone is somewhat related to SSRIs, but it is in a slightly different class (SARI), so it's not really accurate to say that it's "essentially an SSRI". Trazodone does work when used on an as-needed basis for situational anxieties, although, as with any anxiety medication, it doesn't work for all dogs.

Dosage: Dogs: 1 tablet per 30 lb(s) of body weight. Repeat 2-3 times daily as needed, or as directed by your veternarian. Double scored for easier dosing of smaller animals.
I've tried a lot of things this time of year. Positive reinforcement before the fireworks started has helped a lot, giving both dogs Calm K-9 biscuits before dusk really helped a lot, too. Both are sleeping in my room (not normal for a regular evening, but much better than pacing around). I can't say enough good things about these biscuits.

Re: the latest, he's doing well, considering. He's enjoying his food, he's walking longer and better, I eliminated Trazodone at night after learning it can make dogs urinate more frequently, and added CBD so at we're both now sleeping better. (I'm still downstairs on the floor with him, but added more padding!) I feel sane again.
Freaking dogs chased a cat and hopped the little fence into my vegetable garden the other day. Joe tweaked his right front leg, badly. He was getting around on three legs nicely until this morning, but now his left hind leg is going. He wants to be active and do things, and tries to bounce every time he thinks something good may happen.
I suspect the Trazodone had something to do with it and otherwise this is a weird fear response to the pain. As someone else mentioned, Gabapentin is thought to have anxiolytic effects in addition to providing good pain relief. If it were me I would try it again. You could give just 100 mg and if that goes well do 200 at next dose before bed.
