The Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola is a Catholic parish church located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City, administered by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). The parish is under the authority of the Archdiocese of New York, and was established in 1851 as St. Lawrence O'Toole's Church.
A rectory was built in 1979 and by 1982 the parish had over 2,000 households and plans were made for a new church. [2] Construction for the present church was begun in 1983. While it was being built Pope John Paul II established the Diocese of Palm Beach on June 16, 1984. [3] St. Ignatius was chosen as the cathedral for the new diocese.
