The farm was originally 600 acres (240 ha) and grew to be 1,300 acres (530 ha). [2] The portion of the farm in this historic district has been reduced to 350 acres (140 ha). It includes the original brick farmhouse and barn. Martin Flynn bought the land in 1867. Flynn was a livestock judge, cattle breeder, businessman, and railroad contractor.

Living History Farms was the site of Pope John Paul II's ecumenical service, Mass, and homily to an audience of around 340,000 on October 4, 1979. [1] During his homily, the Pope spoke about the importance of farming and linked the people who worked the land with the sustenance of the people of the country.
The largest of these suburbs was North Des Moines. [2] It was connected to Des Moines by way of three streetcar lines, which added to its attractiveness. Local real estate investors established the Polk County Homestead & Trust Co. to develop the northern portion of North Des Moines in partnership with the Prospect Park Improvement Company.

Brown's Park continued for a while longer and the streetcar line from Des Moines opened in 1889. The historic district is the northwest section of a former suburb known as Greenwood Park. It was incorporated as a city in the area of Brown's Park in 1881, and in 1890 it was annexed into the city of Des Moines.
