Year of the Spider is the third studio album by American rock band Cold. It was released on May 13, 2003, through Geffen Records . The album was Cold's most commercially successful, debuting at number three on the Billboard album charts, with over 101,000 copies sold in its first week.
It was the second song released for the album overall; "Gone Away" was released on the WWE Tough Enough 2 soundtrack while recognized as a Year of the Spider track a year prior to its release. The name and much of the album's lyrics were inspired by Ward's sister Jen's battle with cancer. In fact, the band wrote much of the material in Ward's parents' house, particularly in Jen's room. Ward described the making of the album as "a healing process", and fortunately, as the band was finishing up, his sister had gone into remission . [ 6 ]
About a year prior to recording 13 Ways, the band enlisted guitarist Terry Balsamo; frontman Scooter Ward, who had sung and played guitar, wanted to focus solely on singing. After trying a few musicians from Los Angeles , Cold chose fellow Jacksonville native Balsamo, who'd played with its members since the age of 18.

In April 2007, a rumour was confirmed on the Swedish talk show Bert that The Pirate Bay had received financial support from right-wing entrepreneur Carl Lundström. This caused some consternation since Lundström, an heir to the Wasabröd fortune, is known for financing several far-right political parties and movements like Sverigedemokraterna and Bevara Sverige Svenskt (Keep Sweden Swedish).
AllMusic gave the album four out of five stars stating "Cold's songwriting isn't always great and they're too concerned with adolescent angst and horror ('Everyone Dies,' 'Insane,' 'Serial Killer,' etc.), but the band's sound is fully formed, resulting in a strong debut."
