Hampton Towne Centre, formerly Hampton Square Mall, was an enclosed shopping mall in Hampton Township, Michigan, just outside the city of Essexville, Michigan, United States. Built in 1975, the property featured Kmart and William C. Wiechmann Company as its anchor stores , with JCPenney being added on in 1989.

The school was built on farm property acquired from the Garber family. The Garber farm was founded by John and Melissa Garber in the 1800s. The farm was passed on to Otto Garber and his wife Mabel. In addition to farming, Otto Garber was a president in the village of Essexville. Garber sold the land to the district in the early 1960s.
The origins of Essexville-Hampton Public Schools trace back to the mid-1850s when Dutch settlers in the Hampton and Boutell Road areas recognized the need for education despite limited resources. Early settlers drained swampland and established the first school in a log building around 1860, taught by Miss Corbin.
