Together Hiatt Baker 1 and 2 house over 700 undergraduate students (the largest number of any University of Bristol Hall). The older buildings were designed by Sir Percy Thomas and Son in the 1960s. The Holmes and part of the University of Bristol Botanic Garden. Hiatt Baker is named after the eminent biologist Hiatt Cowles Baker.
The red is the shade known as Bristol or "Bristowe" red, chosen by the founders of the University for the hoods of all Bristol graduates. "Bristowe Red" is supposed to recall the famous dye used in Mediaeval Bristol, but in fact Sir Isambard Owen, the Vice Chancellor from 1909 to 1921, took the shade from a band of limestone in the Avon Gorge. The name Wills Hall reflects the university's connection with the Wills family. The fortune made by their famous tobacco empire, W. D. & H. O. Wills and later Imperial Tobacco, enabled Henry Overton Wills III to fund the university's foundation in 1908 with a pledge of £100,000 and he financed many of its finest buildings, such as the Wills Memorial Building.
