The Southport Winter Gardens was a Victorian entertainment area located within the town of Southport, Merseyside.The original winter gardens comprised a theatre, opera house, aquarium, a small zoo, conservatory, promenades and halls situated under the grand glass domes.
The theatre was built on the site of the Opera House, which had burned down in 1929. It was designed by George Tonge (1876–1956), an architect practicing in Southport, whose work included designing many cinemas. The auditorium seated 1,600, and there was a large stage, to accommodate musicals, operas and ballet.
This year's pantomime from the Brunton theatre is a version of the classic A Christmas Carol. But while the production bears name of the Brunton, it will never be back in the original theatre.
Southport Arts Centre was designated as a Grade II listed building on 15 November 1972. [3] Grade II is the lowest of the three grades of listing and is applied to buildings that are "nationally important and of special interest". [ 10 ]
