Calamagrostis (reed grass or smallweed [3]) is a genus of flowering plants in the grass family Poaceae, with about 260 species [4] that occur mainly in temperate regions of the globe. Towards equatorial latitudes, species of Calamagrostis generally occur at higher elevations.

Calamagrostis canadensis takes the form of at least three varieties, including the type. [2] The U.S. Forest Service names others. [7] The type variety (and autonym), is C. c. var. canadensis. This is the name for C. canadensis after varieties of it were named and is used only to differentiate it from the other, newer varieties.
