In 1847, Californio Salvador Vallejo , General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo 's younger brother, sold his livestock and grazing rights in the Clear Lake area to Andrew and Benjamin Kelsey , Charles Stone and E.D. Shirland.

Andrew Kelsey was born in Barren County, Kentucky around 1819, the son of David Kelsey and Susan Jane Cossart. His family moved to Missouri in the 1830s. The "Kelso" family were "the first settlers of the Hoffman Bend section" in St. Clair County, Missouri, "considered pretty shrewd" and "inclined to make the most of their opportunities".

Kelseyville is a unincorporated community in Lake County, California, [2] located six miles (9.7 kilometers) southeast of Lakeport, [3] at an elevation of 1,384 feet (422 meters). [2] For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined that community as a census-designated place (CDP).
The adobe was built by José Serrano in 1863, on the 10,688-acre (4,325 ha) Rancho Canada de los Alisos granted by Governor Juan B. Alvarado in 1842 and Governor Pio Pico in 1846. It is the second of five adobe structures built by the Serranos on the rancho.
