The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII or PFII) is the UN's central coordinating body for matters relating to the concerns and rights of the world's indigenous peoples. There are more than 370 million indigenous people (also known as native, original, aboriginal and first peoples) in some 70 countries worldwide.
The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) is part of the United Nations Secretariat and is responsible for the follow-up to major United Nations Summits and Conferences, as well as services to the United Nations Economic and Social Council and the Second and Third Committees of the United Nations General Assembly. Tauli-Corpuz has served as chairperson of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (2005–2010) [4] and was the rapporteur for the Voluntary Fund for Indigenous Populations. [2] [5] On 2 June 2014, she assumed responsibilities as the third UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. [6]
