Mary Mason Lyon (/ ˈ l aɪ. ən /; February 28, 1797 – March 5, 1849) was an American pioneer in women's education. She established the Wheaton Female Seminary in Norton, Massachusetts , (now Wheaton College ) in 1834.
Mary Lyon was born on 15 May 1925 in Norwich, England as the eldest out of three children of a civil servant and a schoolteacher. She was educated at a grammar school in Birmingham. During that time, she said, she became interested in science thanks to a good schoolteacher [14] and nature books she won in an essay competition. [15]
